Obituary

Arturo Betancourt, a beloved father, grandfather, and devoted husband, passed away on August 28, 2024 at the age of 89. Born on September 6, 1934, in Raymondville, Texas, born to Gregorio and Valentina Betancourt from Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He was the 5th of nine siblings. After the passing of his father when he was very young, Arturo and his siblings dedicated their lives to their mother, traveling from State to State as migrant workers, helping to support their family.

In McAllen, Texas, Arturo met the love of his life, Hermelinda, and the two were married on March 12, 1961. In 1973, they eventually settled in Parlier, California, where they established their home and family. They were never far apart from one another and he always made sure Hermelinda was safe and cared for. They always had great respect and love for one another. Arturo's sense of responsibility and deep love for his family led him to take on the role of caregiver for his mother, Valentina, who remained in their home until her passing.

Arturo worked tirelessly throughout his life, as a young man he migrated with his brothers and mother Valentina to work the fields in California and Midwest states like, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin just to name a few. He was dedicated to helping the family, that dedication continued after settling in California with his young bride where they started their family.  He was a respected farmworker and well known crew boss among local farmers who always wanted Arturo and his crews to work their farms of the central valley.  Arturo earned a reputation for his hard work, and reliable leadership. He retired past the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication.

A man of simple pleasures, Arturo found joy in the quiet moments of life, especially with family. He had a passion for gardening and took great pride in maintaining his beautiful yard. He enjoyed driving his tractor mower and Hermelinda would kid him telling him he better not run over her as she helped guide him when he cut the grass.  Even in retirement his days began early at 7 a.m. with a cup of coffee before he began working on his yard or keeping busy with home projects.  His daily routine included making a daily stop at his favorite store to buy his lotto tickets and taking afternoon naps while listening to his favorite Tejano music. Arturo also made his rounds around town in Parlier, stopping by his sisters-in-law's homes to offer help and companionship whenever he could. He enjoyed watching football, western movies and many other sports. Last year he was so excited and happy that he had the opportunity to see his first NFL game and watch his favorite team play, the Pittsburg Steelers. His weekly visit to the cemetery to place flowers on his mother's grave was a ritual he never missed, a testament to his enduring love and respect for her.

Family was at the heart of Arturo's life. He was a proud father to four daughters and a fond grandfather and great grandfather, whose Sunday morning breakfasts were cherished by his family. He made the most delicious breakfast potatoes, best eggs and his famous tasty chile salsa. His home was the hub of countless family gatherings, filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of togetherness. Arturo was also a cherished member of his community, known for his close relationships with his neighbors and his unwavering kindness. He was always very proud of his physical fitness and even in his 80's he displayed great endurance. He often walked at the local track and used his stationary bike to stay fit.

Arturo was the last surviving brother of the Betancourt siblings, his passing marks the end of an era for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives of his daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a family who adored him and a community who will deeply miss his presence.

Arturo is survived by his loving wife Hermelinda, his four daughters, Corina, Nelda, Zulema, and Isabel and his 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gregorio and Valentina Betancourt, and his siblings Trinidad, Salomon, Maria de la Luz, Ruben, Oscar, Lorenzo, Joe, and Lindolfo, whose memories he cherished throughout his life. Arturo also leaves behind many nephews and nieces in California, Texas and in Florida.

Arturo Betancourt's life was one of dedication, catholic faith, love, and great strength. He will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his deep love for his family, and the kindness he extended to everyone around him with his humble spirit. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family invites all who knew Arturo to join them in celebrating his life.
