Bertha Consuelo
Contreras De Duarte
May 15, 1954 — Jun 17, 2025
Sanger
Bertha Consuelo Contreras De Duarte, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and the heart of the Duarte family, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion that will live on for generations.
Bertha was born in Caurio de Guadalupe, Michoacán, Mexico, to Odilón and Enedina Contreras. As the eldest of 15 children, she took on a role of leadership and care early in life, helping to guide and support her siblings with love, maturity, and grace.
In the 1980s, Bertha immigrated with her husband, Jesús Duarte, and their young children to Reedley, California, in pursuit of a better life. Through hard work and deep sacrifice, she dedicated herself to her family, working long hours in the agricultural packing houses to provide for her children. Her strength was quiet but constant—a loving force that shaped her family's future.
In the early 1990s, Bertha and Jesús purchased their home in Sanger, where she created a warm, welcoming haven filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the smells of her delicious homemade cooking. She is survived by her husband, Jesús Duarte of Sanger; her children: Juan Duarte, Gonzalo Duarte, Teresa Duarte, Frank Duarte, Victor Duarte, Adolfo Duarte, and Jessie Duarte Jr. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Luis Duarte and her father, Odilón.
Bertha was a proud and loving grandmother of 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren—many of whom she helped raise, offering them not only care and guidance but the deep comfort of her presence. She was a true matriarch in every sense, standing by her family through every challenge, and celebrating with them through every joy.
In her later years, Bertha remained vibrant and deeply connected to her community. She had many dear friends with whom she would sit and visit on her front porch, sharing stories, laughter, and memories. She loved attending local events for seniors in Sanger, including those at the Community Center and gatherings hosted by her local church. These moments of connection brought her great joy, and her warm, spirited personality left an impression on all who met her.
To know Bertha was to know joy. She loved to cook, filling her home with the comforting smells of traditional dishes made with care and love. Her tamales, stews, and sweet breads became staples of every family gathering. She would smile anytime she had a chance to go to the casino with her friends or her children. She also enjoyed going for a drive to visit her siblings and spending time with her mother. Her fingers created beautiful knitted pieces that wrapped her loved ones in warmth, just as her presence did. She also found peace and happiness in her garden—she loved being outside, watering her plants and admiring the colorful flowers she had lovingly grown. Her garden, much like her home, was a reflection of the beauty and care she poured into every part of her life.
She will be deeply missed and remembered always—for the love she gave, the strength she showed, and the legacy she leaves behind. Bertha was the foundation of her family, a friend to many, and a light in her community.
Though she may no longer be with us in person, her spirit will forever live on in every shared meal, every song, every prayer, and every gathering of the family she so dearly loved. Bertha's love was a gift to all who knew her—and it will never be forgotten. She was, and will always be, the heart of the Duarte family.
