Margaret L.
Raven
Aug 2, 1933 — Mar 11, 2026
Fresno
It is with a mixture of sorrow and celebration that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret Lenora Raven, a dedicated educator, adventurer, and cherished family member on March 11, 2026, at Hinds Hospice Care in Fresno. Born on August 2, 1933, in Fresno, California, Margaret was a lifelong resident of Fresno having been born on her parents ranch, moving to the city later where she lived a life rich with curiosity and service.
Margaret, or Lenora as she sometimes chose to be called, was the loving daughter of Hans and Carrie Raven who instilled in her a deep appreciation for education and community. A proud alumna of Fresno State, she never married and chose a career as an elementary school teacher in Fresno for 36 years. She was predeceased by her sister Freda. Her legacy of wisdom is lovingly carried on by her nieces: Carol Bode, Judy Fulton, and Linda Steever.
Margaret's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She was an active member at Bethel Lutheran Church, where she found community and joy singing in the choir. She took great pride in her Danish heritage and was a dedicated member of the Danish American Historical Society of California, the American Society of Dania and Dannebrog of California and Nevada, and the Danish Sisterhood of America. She served as president of the Fresno lodge for the Danish Sisterhood for ten years celebrating and preserving the rich traditions of her ancestors.
Margaret found beauty and wonder in the natural world. As a member of the Fresno Gem and Mineral Society, and other gem societies throughout California, she was a passionate hobbyist who collected rocks, minerals and fossils from the natural environment, sometimes with her mother at her side. She traveled to area schools sharing her knowledge of rocks and Indian artifacts, and sold jewelry she cut from the rocks she collected during her travels. Her enthusiasm for rocks and minerals was only matched by her love for travel while circling the globe several times, each journey fueling her passion for learning about different cultures and histories.
In her later years, Margaret developed a keen interest in genealogy, applying the same fervor she used in her other pursuits. She wrote a minimum of fourteen books on the history of the Danes in the San Joaquin Valley and still had several in the works. She also wrote genealogical essays on over twenty-five families of all ethnicities who helped develop the San Joaquin Valley.
Margaret's life was a tapestry of vibrant threads: her spirited sensibility, faith and dedication to education. She leaves behind a fierce legacy of independence that would be difficult to match today.
She was loved and will be missed not only by her family but by her devoted friends and neighbors Jose, Hortentia and Rose.
A memorial service to honor Margaret's extraordinary life will be held at Wallens Funeral home in Sanger April 11, 2026 at 10:00am. The family will be holding a lunch in her honor at 11:30 am at her beloved Bethel Lutheran Church.
